Great DecisionsEveryday, everywhere in the world, events take place that affect our lives. How can we stay informed and understand the impact of global events? By participating in the Great Decisions Program at the World Affairs Council in San Antonio. GREAT DECISIONS-first published in 1954-is the centerpiece of the longest-running informal foreign affairs discussion program in the United States. Each year, thousands of Americans take part in Great Decisions discussion groups to increase their awareness and understanding of, and to express their opinions on, eight of the most timely, thought-provoking U.S. foreign policy concerns. Each topic in the GREAT DECISIONS 2008 briefing book places thematic/geographic issues in historical context and provides background, current policies and alternative policy options. Photographs, maps, charts, and editorial cartoons illustrate the text. Discussion questions, annotated reading suggestions and additional resources, including websites are provided. An opinion ballot for the National Opinion Ballot Report accompanies each topic so that readers can express their views. GREAT DECISIONS 2008 BOOKS HAVE ARRIVED AT THE COUNCIL'S OFFICE. Council members are invited to join a Great Decisions discussion group which meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the Mercantile Building conference room (40 NE Loop 410). Call the Council for more details. Great Decisions is adaptable for groups to tailor-make their own foreign policy in homes, the workplace, or community meeting places. The most effective groups have a moderator and no more than 20 participants who have previously read the briefing book to be better informed of the topic. Participants in the discussion may express their thoughts on various policy options by filling out ballots. To learn more about how this process has been implemented, visit the Foreign Policy Association website. The World Affairs Council can help obtain speakers and facilitate the venues or brown bag lunches can be arranged if interest is expressed. We invite you to lead or participate in a discussion group to learn more about the world and develop important friendships in the process.
