Calendar of eventsThe World Affairs Council of San Antonio brings experts on foreign affairs to the San Antonio community as part of our Distinguished Speaker Series. The Council hosts a multifarious array of prominent speakers from around the globe who offer perspectives on world events you cannot get from the evening news. As a member, you will meet foreign experts, policy makers and diplomats who are closely involved with today's crucial international issues. We strive to bring you current information from as many countries as possible throughout our season. Many of our programs are rebroadcast at 7:00 p.m. on Friday nights on "The Newsmaker Hour" on KSTX-Texas Public Radio. Podcasts are available through this link. The Distinguished Speaker Series is scheduled from September through May. A widely cited expert on monetary policy, he is the author of multiple articles and books, including having co-authored Inflation Targeting: Lessons from International Experience with now Federal Reserve chairman, Ben Bernanke. Dr. Posen has had work published in Foreign Affairs, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post anong many other leading publications. $30 for World Affairs Council members $40 for non-members Upcoming program: Media and the Elections2008-11-18 | 11:30 am Registration, 12:00 Luncheon Program | El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel |Barbara Slavin of The Washington Times will talk about the global impact of the U.S. elections. About the speaker: Barbara Slavin is Assistant Managing Editor for World and National Security of The Washington Times and the author of a 2007 book on Iran entitled "Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S. and the Twisted Path to Confrontation.” Prior to joining The Times in July 2008, she was senior diplomatic reporter for USA TODAY, responsible for analyzing foreign news and U.S. foreign policy. Beginning in 1996, she covered such key issues as the U.S.-led war on terrorism and in Iraq, policy toward "rogue" states and the Arab-Israeli conflict. She accompanied three secretaries of State on their official travels and also reported from Iran, Libya, Israel, Egypt, North Korea, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Ms. Slavin, who has lived in Russia, China, Japan and Egypt, is a regular commentator on U.S. foreign policy on National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting System and C-Span.
